Some of you know that Naomi has been battling terrible acid reflux. Maria had this at 6 weeks of age but she responded quickly to the first tier of medication, which is Zantac. Naomi took the Zantac for 3 weeks and it didn't seem to make a difference. She cried almost constantly whenever she was awake. Feeding was going terribly. She would start off eating well, then start crying during every feeding. Since I am breastfeeding, her pediatrician suggested I try eliminating dairy from my diet, thinking it may be a dairy protein allergy. After giving up all dairy for over a week, which was extremely difficult, it didn't seem to make a difference, either.
So, we decided to take Naomi to see Dr. Chris, the chiropractor. I know a lot of you may be thinking it's weird that we would do this for acid reflux, but Gerry and I are firm believers that if your spine isn't aligned properly, then other areas of your body may be affected. We didn't make this up. Check out their website for more info on how this works: http://www.deltaspinalcare.com.
We took Maria to see Dr. Chris last year when she was battling back to back ear infections. We were tired of pumping her full of antibiotics that obviously weren't working and we didn't even want to hear the word "tubes". Our last hope was to try a more natural, less invasive therapy...and it worked!!! After several visits with him, the ear infections went away and she has only had one since then. (knock on wood, right?)
You also may be thinking who could subject a little baby to the cracking and popping of a chiropractic adjustment? This chiropractor is a lot different than most. His area of expertise deals with only the top 2 vertebrae in the spine. The adjustments are very gentle and very subtle. No popping, no cracking. In fact, Naomi seemed to enjoy it!
Sure, it's a pain to drive all the way out there for each visit, and it sucks to pay the co-pay each time. But I feel so much better helping my children out this way rather than medicating them unnecessarily or subjecting them to risky medical procedures.
I will keep you posted on Naomi's reflux issues. However, I am happy to report that after one visit, things seem to be getting better. Feedings are going very well and she is still a little fussy, but mostly in the evenings. She is happier during her awake times and she is smiling all the time now. I finally feel like I am enjoying her...instead of worrying and being stressed all the time.
One more bit of good news...she slept from 11:00 pm until 6:00 am last night! Whoo hoo!!!
Here are some pics from the first chiropractic visit. They are not very good quality, but they were from the doctor's camera.
